Quick Facts

Jewelers Tiffany & Co., based in New York, are responsible for making the Super Bowl trophy

Three years ago, I can remember talking to general manager Marty Hurney outside an Indianapolis hotel while covering at the NFL Scouting Combines.

Hurney was pretty upset over the team's difficult decision to release wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad just a few hours  earlier. But he knew the team had little choice. It made no sense to pay Muhammad more than $10 million for one final year, no matter how valuable he had been. So they let him go and Chicago Bears signed Muhammad a few days later.

It truly was a move that pained Hurney.

But now the Panthers have a chance to bring him back. Muhammad was cut by the Bears and should be free to sign with any other team (along with ex-Falcons tight end Alge Crumpler) after 4 p.m. Tuesday when the moves become official. The league office was closed Monday for President's Day.

Muhammad still owns a home in Charlotte and has strong connections to the area. Surely, he would love to come back and play with his buddy Steve Smith. The Panthers would probably like to have him back as a mentor to Dwayne Jarrett. But they aren't likely to overspend for Muhammad, who is getting up there in years. But he would be a nice option for Jake Delhomme given his familiarity with him.

I'm tellin you...if we can get him for the vet's minimum w/ a bunch of incentives for about 1-3 years...it's win-win. everybody knows we need this type of receiver in order for our offense to click...and just in case dwayne continues to want to ride the short bus we have our role model in place...he doesn't necessarily have to tutor the guy, he can just play the position how it's supposed to be played, snag these rings and retire at the top and at HOME...

i wouldn't mind bringing him back to be a 3rd option, but we still need a playmaking receiver to compliment smith. muhammad may be a carolina legend, but he isn't going to scare any DBs anymore.

and just because you have heard of alge crumpler doesnt mean hes worth a look. he has not one, but two bad knees and we are finally seeing production out of younger TEs who we drafted. king was second in receptions on the team and we all saw the promise in rosario. word of advice...save your money JR

Well, I for one would love for Moose to wear a Panthers jersey again. He is without a doubt the best possession receiver Carolina has ever had. Even if he has lost a step, he still has GREAT hands and he would compliment Super Steve by actually CATCHING the ball.

As far as Alge Crumpler goes, we'd be silly not to entertain bringing him into the family. He is easily a top 5 receiving and blocking TE in the entire league. Barring his knees not passing the physical, I say we sign him.

He's a great option in the red zone. Something we desperately need so Steve Smith doesn't get quadruple teamed every play.

With the addition of two reliable receivers to relieve some pressure off of Smith and Delhomme the Panthers would be a force to be reckoned with. I

Styles comment above is dead-on. Moose can mostly catch, and block very well. He can mentor Jarrett, Robinson, and Carter. He's good in the red-zone. He deserves to retire a Panther. Don't overpay, but definitely worth a look.

Who cares how much or little money it will take to sign him? He would take up a valuable roster spot, which he's no longer good enough to merit. Why would the Panthers want yet another receiver with some skills but serious limitations - they had a roster full of them last year. And what's all this nonsense about his hands? He has ALWAYS dropped lots of easy catches, and most often at the most crucial points of the game. So what if he's a good blocker - they have the O-line for that. And as for mentoring, well, that's what coaches are for. But don't waste a valuable roster spot that could instead be used for a receiver who could be a positive difference maker, which Muhammad can no longer be.

Moose can still be a difference maker. He blocks just as well, if not, better than our O-line. The X-Factor here will be his ability to mentor Jarrett. If he can teach Jarrett how to be more physical down field blocking, DeAngelo will have a great season. Perhaps, that more important than signing someone to "stretch the field". Make no mistakes, we already have the best player that can stretch the field better than anybody in the league (IMHO). We need someone like Moose to tie up the rest (i.e. blocking and catching balls on 3rd downs). This would be a good decision.

What about locker-room chemistry though? Will Moose be the #3 guy or the #2? Possibly #4 with Drew Carter and Ryne Robinson hanging around. I didn't think before, but Moose would arrive with certain "expectations", don't we think?
