Quick Facts

Jewelers Tiffany & Co., based in New York, are responsible for making the Super Bowl trophy

I've mentioned this a few times before in this blog, but to repeat...  yes, absolutely, no doubt the Panthers will look to trade three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kris Jenkins if they get the right offer. Jenkins was on the trading block last year and, quite frankly, the Panthers never really took him off of it.

But the big question is will they get the right offer?

Jenkins should be fairly marketable since there are very few quality defensive tackles in the free agent market. Some, like Shaun Rogers of Detroit, are available via trade. Jenkins played well enough last season to convince teams that he has fully recovered from a torn ACL in his knee.

Here's the thing to remember in regards to this trade. Jenkins is due a $1 million roster bonus in early March (the exact date is unclear), so if the Panthers are going to deal him, they would like to do it soon and not have to take an additional $1 million cap hit. Like free agency, the NFL trading deadline opens Friday at 12:01 a.m.

The New York Jets, Detroit Lions and Denver Broncos could be among the teams interested in trading for Jenkins.

UPDATE: The Panthers could look at former Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Rod Coleman as a possible replacement. It's been reported that he will visit with the Panthers over the weekend.

The Panthers unsuccessfull attempted to trade Jenkins last year but were fishing for a first- or second-round draft pick as compensation. They didn't get it. The price tag may drop this year since Jenkins wouldn't be as a big of a hit against the cap. In fact, they would actually free up more $2,955,000 under the 2008 salary cap if they trade or release him.

   So, any takers?

Jenkins has made it clear he'd like play closer to his off-season home in the surburban Washington, D.C., area, so you have to figure the Panthers would start first with Baltimore, Washington or Philadelphia as possible suitors. But, just like last year, there is no guarantee Jenkins will be dealt. It's hard to imagine the team simply releasing him.

   If I had to guess, I'd say there's a 60 percent he'll be traded.

UPDATE: The Panthers have tendered offers to exclusive rights free agents linebacker Brandon Jamison and safety Nate Salley, effectively keeping them with the team. The team also confirmed waht we reported a couple of days ago, that restricted free agents Geoff Hangartner, linebacker Adam Seward and tackle Evan Mathis were also tendered contract offers. Hangartner received the second-round tender of $1.47 million, while Seward and Mathis earned the low tender of $927,000.

I say he's a great player that should'nt be cut by no means! If Jenkins wants to leave at least pick up a first round pick for him! The draft is looking on the up side this year for that position if in fact this is to be I hope Carolina picks up the right guy to fill his shoes!

OMG Jenkins is one our best players its only worth a first round draft pick he's definatly worth more than a second. Especially since Hurny can't get anything after the second round good.

I read on another legit website that the Panthers were in talks with the Jets to trade Jenkins. The Jets were also talking to the Lions for DT Rogers. I think the Jets were shopping MLB Vilma. I would rather have some draft picks.

Fox does have tie in's with the Jets remember last years draft? I just hope they are not to stupid to let a player like Jenkins go just for a MLB like Vilma and not pick up a draft pick come on there is a reason why they want to get rid of him you know? I say shop him around teams interested in getting a player at that position earlier in the draft so we will be able to grab another big time player at that position! Dont just give him away Carolina come on now!

Sure would be nice if they could fill one of their holes with an experienced player in return - ie: pick up a decent safety, or maybe even a starting DE.

"It’s looking more and more like the New York Jets will be the team to trade for Carolina defensive tackle Kris Jenkins.

But The Observer has learned that any such deal deal won’t involve linebacker Jonathan Vilma coming to Carolina. He’s probably getting traded, but more likely to somewhere like Detroit or New Orleans.

The Jets are interested in Jenkins playing nose tackle in their 3-4 defense. They’re shopping former first-round pick Dewayne Robertson, another defensive tackle. But Robertson won’t be coming to Carolina either in this deal. He’s already got a huge contract and wants a new multi-year deal.

So what might the Panthers get from the Jets for Jenkins? Perhaps a draft pick. Carolina most likely prefers a second-rounder. The Jets have second and third round picks in the top five of each round. Either choice could be legitimate compensation for Jenkins."

I think a high 2nd round pick would be perfect. The draft is long on NFL-ready OTs and RBs so adding a top 5 2nd round pick would continue the dice rolling in our favor.....DO IT!!!

I agree Jenkins should be traded, I also think that anyone that gives up a second round pick for him would be kinda stupid. Jenkins is far from the player he once was and getting anything out of him is way better than just releasing him. Hey I would gladly take the Jets second round pick if they are willing to give it up! I would also like to have rod coleman come in an get a deal done as some insurance for kemo and lewis.
