Speaking of tackling...

Not only is there a fine line b/t practice-tackling and keeping guys healthy...but also there is one b/t just focusing on stripping the ball and tackling the football. You get what you emphasis the most and while it will no doubt improve...the poor tackling results of the first two practice games would lead one to believe they have spent too much time slapping at the ball to create tournovers as oppossed to physically jarring the ball loose via violent tackling---I understand that you cannot do this much in a practice setting---folks have to stay healthy and these are pro football players who should tackle well in game settings...But I hope they really stoke up the tackling and physical play on Sat. -v- Balt. Often times it can be the second guy invilved in the tackle who strips the ball, with the first defender insurring the sure tackle...looks like the current thought is to try for the strip first...Harris has that knack for being able to hit and strip almost in the same motion...but it should not be the first thought that comes to mind as a defender...jar the ball loose hit violent hitting seems like a safer means to create turnovers but also insure that the dude with the ball is actually stopped....thoughts????

Re: Speaking of tackling...

I think you are right and the lack of good tackling is a bit worrisome, but we struggled in our first two pre-season games last year and blew up the Skins.  Also since these games do not mean anything we are not going to be seeing anyone on the first team will be putting their body on the line for a stop.  I don't question the heart of anyone on the defensive side of the ball and I think that there will be plenty of hard hits come sept. 13th.

My biggest concern is not the tackling, but the D-line getting pushed out of the way by the opponents o-line.  Our offense will be fine and our defense will tackle, but you can't automaticly start being a force on the D-line after sucking all preseason.....AHEM......Hayden!

Re: Speaking of tackling...

It is usually taught as a hit and strip for the first guy anyways.  Meeks has been around long enough that I am sure that is what he is doing.  They don't just say hey slap the ball and forget about the stop.  The second guy is usually allowed to try to get the ball more but with all these Tackling is supposed to be the focus but you are right in that you can't do the violent talking against your own temamates.  The problem is they must have forgot neither Miami nor the Giants had any of their team mates on these teams.  lol.

I think this game will be the best judge of what is to come.

I've been saying this for about a week, but for some odd reason I though we played last night...anyway...I think out tackling will eventually come around.  It's the run game that I'm really stressing over right now.

Re: Speaking of tackling...

I feel like most of these guys SHOULD know how to tackle as I'm sure they've all played the game long enough to have it committed to memory.  I do believe, after reading Reed's story on tackling, that we are toning it down to try and remain healthy since we know there isn't a lot of depth...  anywhere.

We'll see what happens Saturday night.  I know its preseason, but I feel the need to have a statement game of sorts to put everyone else on notice.

Re: Speaking of tackling...

I would rather the statement come against the Ingles.  Punching Mcnabb in his whinny mouth would do me some good.

That would work, too, but my selfish side says that I want it NOW!!!
