Free agent vs. Draft

My last post led to this...to me it has been obvious that we have drafted well but not made out so well on Free Agency. Am I the only one thinking this? We have had success in the draft and groomed pretty well while most of our FA's have been busts. Remember guys like Reggie White? Rodney Peete, Justin Hardwig, and that cat from Indianapolis that retired before camp was finished(?). Our philosophy has been to draft well and groom em up but we need to be able to spot good FA's when the time is right.

Re: Free agent vs. Draft

I agree with what you are saying but IMO Peete and WHite worked out for what we needed at the time.  Actually Hartwig too.  Even if all of them were only for a limited time.  But I agree with your premise it seems for some reason we never really get what we want out of FAs.

Re: Free agent vs. Draft

Drafting a team is good. Drafting is cheap.

I mean, look at the Patriots.  All they do is hoard draft picks and maximize their cap space by having so many young, cheap players that all do so many things.

As much as it pains me to say it, the Pats got it right and because of it, they're winning superbowls.

FA can work, but IMO its typically not worth going after the super-expensive star that will probably fade out once they sign the big contract.

The only FA signing that comes to mind where the Panthers had great success is Stephen Davis.

Re: Free agent vs. Draft

He went down hill in a hurry (age, lack of CB confidence and a poor pass rush can bring this about)and based off of most posts you read about him these days---I'll no doubt get booed off my computer for this post---But I feel good enough about my observation/opinion that I'll put it out there just the same.... but Lucas really was pretty solid for the first 3.5 yrs he played----he just totally went down in flames & stunk in the last 6-8 games he played as a Panther...seems father time just got a hold of his legs...but i wouldn't say he was a bust as a FA aquisition...

Yeah, just watch what happens to the Bills when T.O. starts crying because they ran the ball two times in a row. Or because the TE had 1 more catch in a game than he did.

Re: Free agent vs. Draft

The Pats always pick up old FAs though and it works out for them every damn time.  It is sickening.  If we did that people would have died on the field or something.

And TO is fine ....for a year and one year alone but don't even think about resigning him unless it is with the intent to trade him!   Seriously.
