Where do we go with Free Agency...?

With the NFL Combine beginning in ten days, who do you think we may bring in via free agency after we've seen what we need to from this year's crop of college talent? March 13th at 4:00pm we can begin signing free agents.

I saw in one article that they thought bringing in Red Bryant from Seattle as our new run-stuffer at DT was a wise investment. He's beast of a man at 6'4", 323-lbs. He's not a sack machine by any stretch, but acts as an immoveable wall against the run. And he's only 27 with very few miles on him. I've also seen this morning on CSR that someone thinks we could bring in a vet WR like Hines Ward if he's let go in Pittsburgh (I think that's a bunch of junk personally).

We're really hurting in the salary cap area, so unloading our baggage and restructuring some contracts will have to be done in order to make ANY moves, so what's everyone's take on what direction we'll go?

Re: Where do we go with Free Agency...?

I for one would hate to get Ward. He did nothing for the Steelers last year and is a thug. He gets the DO NOT WANT award for sure.

Honestly, I am not sure of anyone who I really want who is an FA this year. I think since we have a solid core we will just draft and not make any high profile FA acquisitions. They have never really worked out well for us, shy of Shockey...

McGrib, I agree that outside of Stephen Davis and Shockey, we've struck out in FA with big names over the years, but I'm not really talking about big names. Ergo the Red Bryant mentioning. We need to treat FA like we do the draft. BPA, but players with high character and that are at the right price.

The Mark Jones type players right?  I agree that we don't need to go crazy in FA.  Find those guys that can contribute, and do their part to help win ball games.  That HAS worked well for us over the years.  Remember Ricky Proehl? Yeah.....

Re: Where do we go with Free Agency...?

I personally wouldnt mind having another DT in Red Bryant, cause with our recent history you can never havse enough defensive lineman.  But it is only if it makes sense financialy , and with our current cap situation I dont see that happening.  The only big movse we may make is resigning Shockey.  Anything past that will be via free agancy.  Please dont get your hopes up on free agents that play maybe 1 good year for us then end up being a bust.  I remember we signed Maake Kemoeatu and Ken Lucas the same year.  Kemo got hit with the injury bug, but Ken Lucas left Carolina looking like burnt toast that thats all he did was get burnt especially in 2007.  Draft Draft Draft that is how you get better.  I just wish Carolina would look more at the smaller schools for talent, cause there is always a diamond in the rough.

Re: Where do we go with Free Agency...?

Not to belabor the Red Bryant issue, but the guy has only been a starter for one season, was a 4th round selection, and is at the end of his rookie contract. I can't see him commanding top dollar (he made $555,000 last season). So with some Marty Hurney cap magic, that pickup (or one like it) could totally happen.

I still agree with most everyone that we should continue our philosophy of building through the draft and simply adding "complementary players" via free agency. It's okay to make a big splash when it's warranted (and we have the cap space), but most guys play in their contract years to get that payday, then phone in their games the rest of their career.

Perhaps NO WR Meachum??? I know he has hurt the Panthers as a WR...but I am not 100% certain it was his WR skills or Gambles missed tackles on him!!??!!

But he would be a good pickup IMO!
