Moving Up Scenario...

I just read an interesting article about moving up in the draft to nab Matt Kalil at #4. Word around the campfire is that the Vikes are more interested in Morris Claiborne than Kalil, meaning to get Kalil we'd have to do some dealing with Holmgren and the Browns. They've already made it known they'd be willing to trade back to #8, but we're #9. Considering what it took to get the 'Skins from #6 to #2 to get RGIII, I'm wondering what the Browns would want from us to move up five slots for the #4 overall selection. Obviously the Rams had all the leverage with the 'Skins so desperate for a franchise QB, but we're not necessarily in that same boat for a future franchise LT. And, of course, this all becomes null and void if the Vikes are bluffing about favoring Claiborne.

I'm guessing it would take this year's first as well as next year's, and maybe a conditional pick. I could also see them asking for this year's first and Stewie, since they don't have a RB with Hillis in KC now. What do you all think of these scenarios, and are there any other trade scenarios you could see happening? Discuss...

Re: Moving Up Scenario...

Well I've read a few rumors about us being in talks with the Browns for a trade for the #4 spot.  This included Stewart (RB being an area of weakness for them) and our #9 for their #4 and a third round pick.  If this were to happen I say we should pick up Blackmon.  I am usually not sold on picking up OFF this high because they have greater potential to bust IMO but that guy looks like the truth and although we have more needs on DEF, we need a stud at WR bc Smitty is still solid but may not be for long....

Re: Moving Up Scenario...

I am vehemently opposed to moving up in the draft for the following reasons.

1) Trading Stewart or DeAngelo is kinda absurd when you think of their injury history and how dominant our running game is. Tolbert was brought in to play FB not RB. If we trade Stewart butterfingers Goodson (returning from injury) is our second back). We take an area of strength to an area of average, one injury away from disaster. Plus the odds we get a player who can increase the value of another position greater than keeping Stewart or DeAngelo is very slight given the fact we would be giving up more picks on top of the RB to move up.

2) Our history of trading up is a disaster! How did Otah, Brown, Armanti turn out? Seriously, scalping future picks to miss on talent. No thank you please. On the contrary, how has trading back worked out. Well in essence we traded Derrelle Revis to the Jets for Jon Beason and Ryan Kalil. Yes Please.

3) Moving top top of first round (top 5 picks) costs way too much. I love blackmon and kalil don't get me wrong. Heck I love claiborne. But there are 3 other WR's, 3 other tackles, 3 other guards, 3 other cb's, all of which would be great fits later in the first round.  The difference is to get them we'd acquire more assets rather than give up assets.

Re: Moving Up Scenario...

I guess it's that time of year...

It has been reported that we need to sign Stewie first to get anything for him but we can't because of cap room, right? Then the other parties involved have to agree on the sign and trade clause thingy right? Seems like a lot to make it happen for some maybes this year. Not too many solid picks after 4 this year and Blackmon is our biggest potential help. Claiborne is not as MONSTA to me as others are saying. To me Kalil and Blackmon are the only "sure things" if there is such a thing (outside Luck/RGIII) this year. After those four it gets maybeish IMO.

exactly my point. i think a lot of positions are chocked full of value this year because there are 4-5 players with late first-second round grades at positions of desperate need for us. (CB, LB, DT and then OL).

I will document some players before the weekend hopefully.

Re: Moving Up Scenario...

Stewart is still under contract for this year so we won't have to re sign him to deal him.  The other team will just have to swallow his 1.3 mil guaranteed and possibly his 2.6 mil (with bonuses but if he meets the bonuses I'm sure they wont mind) contract.

Here is an interesting scenario going around as well:
