Conspiracy theory...

Hey, guys, long time no see! Sorry for my absence and lack of contribution to the site, but the past few months have been hectic to say the least. Anyway, great to be back!

So, I got to thinking about the whole Hurney firing as well as what Rivera said about it not necessarily being the last one. I started postulating what could be in store for our downtrodden, yet beloved, organization.

We talked two years ago about possible coaching hires once Fox's tenure was up at the end of the 2010 season and one that kept coming up was Bill Cowher. Now, as my subject line specifies, this is merely conjecture and conspiracy theory on my part, but what if Cowher has had enough of the NFL Today on CBS, and is ready to get "the chin" back to work on a sideline near you? We all know that Big Cat has an affinity for the Steelers' recipe for success and that he wanted exactly that when he created our team. I presume he still covets their success and style of football.

When Cowher was with the Steelers he was essentially the team's GM since they didn't historically have one until last off season. He's not used to operating under the thumb of a GM, so why not bring him in now that he's back in Raleigh with his family and let him rule the roost? The reason all this makes sense other than the obvious is that (as we all know) new GMs want to hire their own head coach, and Rivera just got here. To just hire a new GM that would likely fire Rivera, hire another guy who would then "round-file" all the assistants, and also clean house on the roster, just doesn't make a lot of sense. However, were we to bring in someone like Cowher and give him control of his own drafts as well as player and personnel decisions, there would be less turn-over except for players that Hurney held onto because his pride wouldn't let him cut bait (I'm talking to you, Clausen and Edwards).

Thoughts...?

Re: Conspiracy theory...

If a change has to be made I'd rather they lure Dungy out of the media booth over The Chin!

That said, regardless of the HC being Rivera, The Chin, Dungy or Timbucktoo I wanna a HC who desires to coach the most physical team in the NFL...that goal - to be the most physical team in the league would than frameup every football decision made...personnel, O, D, ST philosophy all governed by the goal to kick booty and be physical!

I like Rivera and really hope he has seen the light and begins to dictate the style of offense he really wants...physical...put the bit in Chuds mouth and allows him to utter the play call zone read 3-4 times a game!!! If Rivera can do this I think the team wins 6 out of the last 10 and he keeps his job! If he continues to allow the offense to be all about the finesse of zone read...to HEdoublehockeysticks with Rivera...bring on a new HC!

Re: Conspiracy theory...

Well said, cornhusker! I had a co-worker mention that Mike Holmgren is looking to get back on the sideline as well after his tenure in Cleveland ends. Not sure if I would want the Walrus here, but since it's in line with the HC/GM theory I had regarding The Chin, I thought I'd mention it.

Re: Conspiracy theory...

We have had enough of these laid back personalities!  This team needs a Cower/Holmgren/Gruden like attitude to come in here and light a fire under them.  I like Rivera, and I really hope the guy figures it out, but we need a coach to stand up and tell these guys when they play like crap, or pull them off the damn field when they play unmotivated, lackluster football!

And, I agree that Chud needs to be limited in his play call abilities because it is clear that his ability to make adjustments is very suspect.

Re: Conspiracy theory...

JD89...Dungy can motivate boys to become full grown men and NFL football players with out spitting all over them like The Chinny Chin Chin! LOL :-)

(I like The Chin...but Dungy I like better...Dungy can push the right buttons, even more buttons than The Chin IMO...unless Rivera gets it figured out I think both these guys would do the job very very well...but I'm pulling for Rivera ar least for now....think he can be a super HC once he figures out how to be the Buck Stops Here-MAN!!!!)

Re: Conspiracy theory...

The thing is, Carolina has had some great coaches. But they were great before or after they left our team. It just doesn't seem to work out when they are here. I think a hard nosed GM/HC would be the ticket for us. We always have the laxidazy HC's and it just doesn't work. I cannot believe the talent we have we can only muster 1 win! Yes we have been close, but the motivation to finish is not there. I'm a fan of Gruden and I know he get's all mushy on MNF, but you never so that on the sidelines when he coached. He and Cower can bring that intensity we need. Dungy is great, but his low key approach is not what our team needs. my 2 cents...
