Carolina Panthers Retrospective

Sometimes changes are not so good.

Here we are flipping out and trying to figure out when, where, and why Jake went south so fast. Got me thinking about it also but, no ideas hit me... Maybe!!! he is washed up or maybe he is thinking too much but, I could not center on what it was.

Then I was listening to the NFL network on the radio and the topic came up. Here is the thing Rip Scherer has been working with Jake since getting here on his fundamentals. See this link if you want to see some more on this http://www.charlotteobserver.com/panthe … 76871.html

Well this is where they discussed how Jake is taking so long to get rid of the ball and that he is throwing the ball more over handed this year. And then they asked Rip what was his thoughts on this. He said that Jake had improved his footwork and lower waste actions to the point that he decided to start getting Delhomme to work on his release and the motion of his pass. He said in hine sight that it may have been wrong to mess with a veterans delivery.

After he left the program the analyst started ripping him and every QB coach that tries to change a QB waste up, they agreed it was fine to work on the waste down but, they could not see how you teach someone to do something different that they have done over a million times. Apparently Rip also told Jake this past week to stop thinking about how he is throwing the ball and just go back to what he was comfortable with.

It may or may not be the cause but dang it can't be helping our QB find an open receiver or complete a pass if he is trying to think about his mechanics in the middle of a game. Please don't think I'm Gohomme Fan, I cringe and cuss every bad toss, like most of you but, I do support this team and whomever  is our QB . If our coaches are screwing up our passers I think everyone would like to know.

Wow, i never thought about it but Rip is the new QB coach. this is his first year here. This could actually be the root of the problem... Trying to change a starters thorwing motion is crazy, you do that maybe with a backup so they can get used to it... Thanks for sharing this, food for thought for sure...

Re: Sometimes changes are not so good.

That's an interesting concept I almost forgot Jake had a new QB coach that has been monkeying with his "fundamentals". That really doesn't explain the AZ meltdown last year. But in hindsight Jake has always been know to stink it up a bit but not anything like lately. Why would you mess with a veteran QB thats obviously set in his ways? Would anyone tell Phillip Rivers to stop throwing the football like a shot-putt? Hell no because it works for HIM. Maybe its his attempt to bring some of Cleveland's winning ways to
Charlotte. Thanks Rip.

Re: Sometimes changes are not so good.

I am just glad I wasn't the only one who thought this was strange. I never understood how do you teach someone who made it into the NFL how to throw the ball better, they wouldn't be here if what they did didn't work.

I do understand you can teach a guy to set his feet and to keep two hands on the ball on your delivery to keep down the fumbles on blind side hits. But to change a delivery of a QB and yes it has been done before but I can't remember a single QB that was better for it.

Honestly I think that was what destroyed David Carr's career (other than sacks), he was a 3/4 motion guys till he got to Houston then they tried to change him as well. His best seasons were when he still had his side arm delivery. And yes they also tried the same thing with Philip Rivers  till he said no I can't change my motion.

Re: Sometimes changes are not so good.

Valid point I couldn't agree more. This might also explain some of why Fox has had such a tolerance for the poor play (yeah I know about the contract extension) but he might understand that his once pro bowl QB has been tinkered with and effectively broken.

Re: Sometimes changes are not so good.

good points but...

1)why bring in a QB coach from a QB mecca like Cleveland?
2)Jake has always had a weird throwing style and many others have had odd
  deliveries and been a success.
3)Jakes problems have nothing to do with mechanics its all in his decision
making its always been bad and now is even worse for whatever reason.

And thats why Jake has to go...he can throw it 100 mph but if he is gonna throw it into triple covergae every time or choke in every close game then mechanics mean nothing..Brett Farve is who is because mechanics mean nothing to him he might throw it backhanded or flip it like a secondbaseman going for a double play in baseball but he will make the play...thats what Jake no longer does and thats why his time is over in my eyes...and Fox as well for not seeing it earlier and refusing to see it now.
