Reality Check People!

Going into this off-season I was quite optimistic we would be able to build on last seasons heartbreaking finish.

We rebounded nicely by having, in my opinion, the best draft in franchise history, in which we found a solid book end pass rusher, a safety/cb hybrid in the mold of bob sanders, a dynamic change of pace back to compliment double trouble and add to our return game, an heir apparent for brad hoover when he finally retires, a future starting OG and a speedy returner with some upside at CB.

As the Peppers situation played out, with him ultimately accepting his tender, I began to lose some confidence.  Not because I didn't appreciate him as a player, but because it truly hurt is long term financially and personnel wise.

We had no room to add quality depth.  Now we have had 4 starters on an average defense go down in training camp.  I spoke with a friend who is a physical therapist and he said the greater concern injury wise on our roster is probably the achilles of stewart but that there is a strong chance beason and davis could end up missing the entire season if the injuries worsen.

It is just pre-season but some facts of our roster have not changed.

Jake is a great leader, he is a warrior and I love that about him.  But he still panics in the pocket, locks onto smitty and doesn't effectively read defensive coverages or go through his progressions.  As long as he is our QB i will pull for him, but the writing has been on the wall for a while and we need to find our future QB soon so that we don't miss the window for success with our most promising young players.

This window is actually very limited in reality because of the financial burden of our star players.  If Peppers re-signs we will not financially be able to keep DeAngelo and Beason.  Remember (Gamble and Gross are already making top $ for their positions compared to NFL and those are long term deals).

It all comes back to us not actually trading Peppers, now we have given up next years draft pick, one that would have most likely landed us a Colt McCoy or Tebow or Snead.

It looks like we are headed to a 7-9 season at best.  Seriously take away the fanaticism people, look at our defense, look at our schedule, look at our depth, look at it all objectively.

We can clearly score 24 points a game if Jake plays well.  But we will need to score over 30 to even compete in most of our games with the way our pre-season has played out.

I love our Carolina Panthers but just think we need to take a tempered approach to this year, recognize this year really is a year to see if our young guys can step up (i'm looking at you Jarrett, Teal, Goodson, Captain, Barnidge).  The season isn't over by any means but we are gonna be in a dog fight to reach .500.

Re: Reality Check People!

Well the way you describe it we could realistically go 0-16.  Here is a real reality check it is the preseason and little can be discerned from it. If those games were the regular season.  Davis, Smith, Moose, and Stew would have all played but bc it wasn't they did not.  Beason and Kemo are the only legitimate can't play injuries right now.  The rest are just to play it safe bc it is the preseason.

Re: Reality Check People!

step back off the ledge dude.  one main point- this league changes so much from year to year, don't put too much stock in the strength of schedule.  i mean, two of our games against a team with a winning record from last year is tampa, and while they could beat us, they are not going to win 9 games this year, more likely 5-6 so #'s can be misleading.  people who played miami last year said, they only won 1 game last year, we will kill them, yet miami won 11 games, so from year to year, dynamics can change greatly, even with in one team

Re: Reality Check People!

I am not looking at last years record when looking at our opponents, I am looking at the quality of their players and offensive/defensive/st systems.

We play 2 Teams that will shut down our run.

We play 5 teams that pressure QB's into making mistakes, and you know ours will make those mistakes, he always does.

We play 4 teams with High Octane Offenses, our defense is in shambles and was only average last year anyway, we have good players but for some reason can never stop anyone, blitzing would be a novel idea.

We can still win 7 games and in fact 8-8 may win the NFC South getting them into the playoffs.  Atlanta will not surprise anyone and New Orleans still has no defense.  Tampa is the JV team of the NFL this year.

We can win our division just don't expect first round bye or 10 wins.

I have to agree YTNC. I love how most Panthers fans are subject to blind optimism. lol

Re: Reality Check People!

Well I was looking at the schedule yesterday and you know, it aint that bad. Its second toughest in the league but from top to bottom we have a shot at these guys this year. I think the wins I questioned earlier could come from NY, Dallas, Philly, Tampa (twice) and ATL. Those were tougher before in my mind but I think we can do it-coupled with wins vs. NO, Buffalo and steal one from NE-we could win 9 this year easily and squeak into the playoffs. Then it's new life and game on! So yes, step away from the ledge people...

Re: Reality Check People!

It is not out of the question that the South divison champion could very well be 8-8....back-to-back South titles is just that regardless of the overall record. Just make the playoffs...everyone is 0-0 and who ever gets hot takes it all the way home as SB Champs...Nothing wron with a 12-8 Sb Championship season!!!!

Given the rough schedules the NFC South divison teams face (plus having to play one another within the divison) I beileive this scenario to be realistic...and if 8-8 or 9-7 wins it, this will be a year whereby only the divison champion will make the tournament---wild card teams coming from the East and North
