Who's to blame?

Just read an interesting article on ESPN about Peppers and the drama that insued this off season. So I have to ask what may or may not have been asked already? If Peppers has a bad season this year then the attitudes we have towards signing him to such a huge contract (17-18 million) will hurt even worse. It will move towards pure hatred. My question is this...who do we blame the most for this? I love Jerry Richardson and think he is the best owner in all of pro sports PERIOD. But do we blame him for handcuffing JPep into the tender or do we place the blame on Pep for not living up to the hype? It's a tough thing to think about because we could of let him just walk. I always blamed Pep but now starting to recant considering he wanted to go. We are gambling he will pay off one more year for us. JRich loses the gamble if Pep drags this year. What do you all think?

Re: Who's to blame?

I think you gotta blame Peppers for his lack of productivity.  Apart from the 07 season the guy has been beastly and there is no reason for the staff to think he won't play big again.  So if he doesn't have a big year, you can't blame the coaching staff for think he would have another good year.  If he bombs it, I say we pack Pepper's bags for him/

Re: Who's to blame?

If Peppers doesn't have a good year, I think you have to place the blame on the organization, because of the fact that there paying this guy $17 mil for 1 season, WHEN HE DOESN'T EVEN WANNA BE HERE!! I have a feeling he'll just show up and collect his money, he'll probably get like 7 or 8 sacks, then demand a trade at the end of the year. Forcing him to come back doesn't guarantee that he's gonna play as hard as he did in 2008. Here comes another "illness" like in 2007, except the Panthers fans are the ones that are gonna feel ill.

Re: Who's to blame?

Lets not forget that 90 and CC could have positioned themselves much better for a possible trade if they really wanted it, instead they limitted the field to 4 teams and did not sign the franchise papers---these action severly limitted what the organization could and could not do in any attempt on their part to trade him away...at the end of the day...I am not 110% convinced that 90 & CC really wanted to be traded...they have 17 mill and can play out this exact hand/senario out again at the end of the '09 season...

As a player I certainly believe 90 is one of the top 3 DE's in the NFL...just look at all the attention in double teams and rb chip blocks he has to deal with each and every Sunday...one would think D-Lew or some other Panther DT could register at least 6-7 sacks because of all the attention oppossing o-lines give to 90 on passing downs...

At the end of the day if Carolina cannot be in the top 10 in rushing defense 90 not any other Panther will have high sack numbers...they don't look to stout against the run thus far...so if that trend contiunes---porous rundefense that is...sum other measure of success for 90's season will have to be the measure...cuz team are not going to throw the ball, and in doing so put 90 in position to chage the game with sacks...if they can just cram that damn ball right down Carolina's throat...

Re: Who's to blame?

The Panthers organization are the ones to blame already. We can see through these current injuries the snowball effect that Peppers' monster contract has in regards to back ups. If the Panthers have a losing record this year, I think the franchising of Peppers will be the key reason why and they have no one else to blame for that but themselves. They handcuffed a guy that doesnt want to play for them & now they expect him to go all out & show effort on every play? Thats something Peppers has NEVER been known to do in the first place, let alone now hes doing it for a team HE DOESNT WANT TO PLAY FOR!

Agreed, Excellent point about Peppers not giving his all. Everyone wants Carolina to sign a veteran DT but with what money. It's gonna probably take around $2.5-$3.5 mil a year for a decent veteran DT.& if the Panthers don't have atleast a decent season, we may have seen the last of Fox.

Re: Who's to blame?

My thought is to trade him by the trade deadline if he is having a repeat of his 07 vacation err I mean season.  The team would control where he went and what compensation they'd get in return.  Better to get something instead of nothing, because if he has a bad season they have to let him walk.  As far as who would be to blame well it would be both sides...Peppers for not performing and Fox/Hurney for betting the farm he would.

As far as cap room the team according to Pat Kirwan has about 5 million, plenty to sign a veteran DT for this year.
